Some general tips for a visit to Prague (by Anthony Fresina):

  1. Don't get a taxi on the street or at the train station (mafia owned and operated). 90% chance you will be charged 4-5 times the normal price. Call a taxi service from a pay phone if you can.

  2. The fine for not having a stamped tram ticket is US $10. Ask the inspector for a photo id as some con artists scam tourists by asking them for their tickets and showing a fake/stolen badge.

  3. Look at Czech women. They're hot.

  4. Notice the beauty of the city.

  5. Czech out the gardens at the Castle, which were recently opened up and may not be in the usual tourist books.

  6. A traditional Czech meal is pork, dumplings and cabbage ('Veprovy, knedlik a zeli'). Actually quite good if you go to one of the Czech restaurants listed below (Osmicka or U Carodejky).

When i first moved to Prague in 1999, the biggest adjustment i had to make was dealing with the food and service in Czech restaurants. While greatly improved in the last year, the first months we're rough - me being extremely picky and having an aversion to butter, mayonnaise and anything white on top of my food. If you're going to Prague, send me an e-mail telling me how nice it is of me to steer you in the right direction (and what you think of these places). Anyway, best places to eat:

  • Turbanti (Nachodska 868, Praha 9 - Horni Pocernice) - one of the best Italian places in Prague as far as i've experienced. good service, good pizza and pasta and great Tiramisu. Reasonably priced but far from the center (US $4 per person). take the yellow metro line to Cerny Most and the rest by taxi.

  • U Carodejky (Slovinska 23, Praha 10 - Vrsovice) - A nice traditional Czech restaurant with good service. If you enjoy steak, try the 'biftek (steak)' which is a great value and well prepared. It's more like a filet than strip steak (US $4 per person).

  • U Tucnaku (Praha 5 - Smichoff) - My favorite place for pizza. They put the most sauce on and they serve Velvet, one of the best Czech beers. Cheap too and good service (US $3 per person).
  • Ostroff (Strelecky ostrov 336, Prague 1 - on the river one bridge south of the Charles Bridge) - fancy Italian. the bar is one of the nicest in Prague with an amazing view of the river at night. Food is served by waiters who coordinate delivery so the plates are put on the table at the exact same time! quite expensive by Prague standards but good for a date (US $30-40 per person)

  • Cantina (Ujezd 38, Prague 1) - The best Mexican in Prague. Good service, great Mexican Mariachi music and good chicken fajitas. Always crowded after 6 - call ahead for a reservation unless you don't mind sitting at the bar (US $8 per person).

  • Grossetto (Namesti Miru, Prague 2) - fast, decent service and a big menu with pizza and pasta. very popular and quite American in that they turn over tables quickly. Voted best pizza in Prague several years in a row but i prefer Tucnaku (US $4 per person).

  • Radost (Belehradska 120, Prague 2) - The service here is erradic and in my opinion, usually quite bad. however, Radost is one of the few vegetarian restaurants in Prague and is the only place to get good food after 11pm (they're open till 4am). They offer some great asian and middle eastern style dishes as well as good salads. The club below is one of the big dance clubs in Prague, worth a trip before or after dinner. Very nice atmosphere, reasonably priced and very popular for brunch on Saturday and Sunday (try the huevos rancheros. US $7 per person including tip)

  • Bohemia Bagel (Ujezd 14, Prague 1, and Masna 2, Prague 1) - Another place for healthy food. Great place for a bagel sandwich and soup or brunch on the weekends - i think they serve french toast and bagel melts for brunch. Over-the-counter style dining with bottomless, brewed coffee for $1!! Internet cafe as well where you can check your e-mail or visit AFresh Production (US $4 per person).

  • Delux (Vaclavske Namesti 4, Prague 1) - Thai food in Prague! Right off of the most populated square in Prague, Wenceslas Square, this is your best bet for Thai. The red curry saces are good and the Pad Thai is reasonable for a place with very little Thai natives. Also doubles as a Salsa club with a live band and dance lessons most days of the week (US $12 per person)
